An aphrodisiac cookbook

Front Cover

I’m a bit of a foodie, thanks to being influenced by some self-taught gourmets in my youth. When I saw that EdenFantasys.com had a cookbook I’ve been coveting ever since spying it at a friend’s house, I eagerly requested it for review.

InterCourses: An Aphrodisiac Cookbook by Martha Hopkins and Randall Lockridge is not just another compilation of recipes elegantly packaged. This book contains recipes featuring foods that are believed to have aphrodisiac qualities.

InterCourses Back Cover

Back Cover

I actually received a copy of The New InterCourses, which is the revised and expanded 10th Anniversary edition, so while the front of my copy is similar to the original, the back cover is different.

The book starts off with a brief introduction and background information, which is really quite interesting. I normally skip over any preamble because I’m the type who wants to start drooling over the recipes as soon as possible, but this one is nice and short, as well as entertaining.

There are 19 chapters, each focusing on a different aphrodisiac, complete with a little background history as to why or how the food is believed to be capable of igniting passion, as well as gorgeous photographs of models wearing the featured ingredient.

While technically they’re nude, the food covers up the necessary body parts, so it’s all very artistic and tastefully done. I think the chapter covering booze has my favorite picture. I love this shot.

The New InterCourses features some ingredients that I never would have considered aphrodisiacs, like asparagus, artichokes, and black beans. Of course, the usual suspects are here: oysters, strawberries, chocolate, grapes, etc. The recipes vary in complexity quite a bit, from the quick and easy to those requiring more time and culinary skills.

InterCourses Ginger Chapter PhotoI suppose this is good in a way, as there’s something for everyone. There is also a resources section, which is very helpful, an aphrodisiac usage guide offering suggestions on how and when to use what, a page on making massage oils and salt scrubs, and an index. Yay! I love books with indexes.

So far, I’ve made three of the recipes, all with good results. The Chocolate Torte with Strawberries didn’t last long enough for me to even get a picture of it, but here’s the Cozy Vegetable Korma (my first effort at Indian cookery).

I also made the Chocolate-Almond truffles, which were the easiest truffles I’ve ever made, and these awesome delights are dairy free. I’m going to try the recipe with hazelnuts next time.

I quite like this cookbook, and I’m definitely looking forward to trying out more of the recipes, but I do think InterCourses is geared more for those who prefer to eat, think about, and look at pictures of food rather than those of us who enjoy cooking it. The reason I say this is because there are NO photos of the actual completed recipes.

While I don’t necessarily expect a full-color glossy of each dish in the book, a few here and there would be helpful as I like to know what I’m striving for. Also, there are no cook and prep time guidelines, which is another helpful element that’s missing. The recipes do list the yield, and quite a few of the recipes are scaled for 2-3 servings, which makes sense as they’re meant to be for a romantic evening of seduction, but others are family-sized.

If cooking isn’t really your thing, EdenFantasys.com has plenty of other offerings to get you in the mood. As an online adult toy store, they also have a wide selection of erotica and instructional books that are well worth checking out.

Fun Factory Kissable Love FluidFun Factory has come out with a line of products to “seduce you and all your senses” which includes a Kissable Love Fluid that’s available in yummy-sounding flavors like Chocolate, Coconut, Orange, Cranberry, and Strawberry. I’m a big fan of Fun Factory sex toys and always eager to try something new, so I’m glad Fascinations sent me a bottle of the cranberry flavored Kissable Love Fluid to try.

Flavored lubes and warming concoctions like this are an easy and fun way to add variety to couple play. Often lubes and massage oils can leave a bitter tasting residue on the skin, but the flavored products are meant to be easier on the tastebuds and usually smell nice too. Kissable Love Fluid is both flavored and has a warming effect. Just apply it to skin and gently blow to create a warming sensation.

I like to list what is in the lubes and personal care products I review because some people have sensitivities and need to avoid certain ingredients and chemicals. Kissable Love Fluid contains:

  • Propylene Glycol (moisturizer commonly used in cosmetics)
  • Glycerin (humectant and improves smoothness)
  • Aqua (water)
  • Hydroxypropylcellulose (a gelling and thickening agent derived from plant cells)
  • PEG-12 Dimethicone (emulsifier and foam builder commonly found in cosmetics)
  • Sodium Benzoate (preservative)
  • Potassium Sorbate (preservative)
  • Aroma (Flavor)
  • CI 16035 (Red 40)
  • CI42090 (Blue No.1)

Fun Factory Kissable Love Fluid PackagingThe packaging is a simple paperboard box with the pump-top bottle of Kissable Love Fluid on one side, and the bottle lid and information pamphlet on the other. The bottle itself is nice and discreet, with a design that would blend in with other personal care products.

Fun Factory Kissable Love FluidThe cover fits very snugly on the pump-top, so this may be okay to travel with, but I’d still seal it in a plastic bag. I assumed the pump top would disperse a spray, but instead the love fluid comes out in a 1/16 of a teaspoon, spurt. Yes, I measured it. I’m a bit of a geek that way.

I suppose this makes sense if you’re going to be using it on the genitals, as all you need is a tiny amount, and a pump top is very convenient. But to use more like a massage oil, it takes to long to pump enough out, so I just unscrew the cap and carefully pour it

Fun Factory Kissable Love Fluid ReviewI’m sure my bottle of cranberry-flavored Kissable Love Fluid is meant to smell like cranberries, but to me it smells more like a cross between fruit punch and cough syrup. That doesn’t top my list of arousing scents, but fortunately the fragrance isn’t strong.

The consistency is similar to thin maple syrup, so it can drip and get a little messy, but that’s part of the fun. I would be careful though, as it’s a bright red color that may stain.

Taste-wise, it’s pretty nasty if you stick your finger in it and have a lick. It tastes as it smells, like cough syrup. However, tasting residual love fluid that has already been applied to skin is much better. The taste is more subtle and closer to fruity, and while I wouldn’t call it delicious, it’s not wholly unpleasant.

Once applied to skin, gently blowing on the love fluid creates a mild warming sensation. This can be used to enhance massage or to heighten arousal, as the blood flow will already be increased in the genitals and other erogenous zones.

Since this product contains glycerin, I don’t use it on my genitals, but I use it to enjoy warm, tingly sensations elsewhere. I expected this stuff to be a yucky, sticky mess, but it’s really not. As it gets worked into the skin and dries there is some residue, but it just feels dry, not tacky or greasy, and it rinses off fairly easily.

****Okay guys, the contest has ended. Thank you to everyone who participated! The winner of the Butterfly Kiss, as determined by random.org, is comment number 18! Congratulations, Siennasai!****

The Butterfly Kiss was one of the first sex toys I reviewed on this blog, way back in early July, and I was very impressed with it. Mine still has a top spot in my collection, and it’s one of my “go to” toys for when I need something quick and effective.

Butterfly Kiss Vibrator

This dual-stimulator is a little bit different from rabbit-style vibes in that rather than a whimsically-shaped bullet attached to the shaft, the Butterfly Kiss has an offset shaft and a wee platform to press against the vulva for external stimulation. The butterfly has some nice ridged texture, which feels awesome as the antennae flap around stimulating the clitoris, and the wings flutter against the labia.

This is an ideal beginner toy, especially for anyone new to dual-stimulation vibes. It’s modestly sized, easy to control, phthalates-free (as are all the products I review), and very flexible. Made from TPR, the motor sits underneath the butterfly, so the shaft is quite bendy since there’s nothing firm inside it. It’s also effective for those of us with a bit more experience using vibrators, too, so don’t underestimate this one.

For those interested in the technical specs, the Butterfly Kiss has 3 inches of insertable length, with a 1 1/4-inch diameter. There is a single, push-button control on the bottom, which is the battery compartment cap, and did you notice that it’s flat so this vibe can stand up on its own? The vibrations are pretty strong considering it’s only powered by 2 AAA batteries, and there are 3 speeds to play with.

So, who wants to try a Butterfly Kiss? The awesome folks at Babeland are letting me give one away, woohoo!

Joyballs Single Kegel Exercise ToyNever underestimate the importance of doing Kegel exercises, and there are plenty of toys available to help make working those pelvic floor muscles more fun. I recently tried the Joyballs Single from Joy Division, which is a hollow silicone ball with another, smaller ball inside that rattles around as the user moves about. There is a handy retrieval cord that is partially covered with the same silicone.

The Joyballs Single is spherical (unlike some other other Kegel balls that are more elliptically shaped), and measures a little over 4 1/4 inches in circumference. Packaged in a pretty silver box, it comes with a satiny silver storage pouch, instructions in many languages, and a sample packet of lube.

I apologize for the poor quality of the photo. Since the box is a very shiny metallic silver, I couldn’t figure out a way to take a picture of it without a reflection showing.

I’m currently reading Female Ejaculation & the G-Spot, and according to Deborah Sundahl, women with healthy pelvic floor muscles should be able to squeeze a banana in half. I’ve been afraid to even try, because I seriously doubt my PC muscle is that strong, so I decided to ramp up my Kegel exercises.

Joyballs Single Kegel Exercise ToyJoyballs Single Silicone On Retrieval Cord Ripped

Unfortunately, the silicone ripped where the string attaches to the ball after only 4 uses. This was very disappointing because I actually like the Joyballs Single better than my SmartBalls. I find it easier to keep in when I’m being active, and I think that’s because it fits me better.

I hope that this is a fluke and the one I received is faulty. I emailed the manufacturer, more than once, and when they finally did get back in tough with me they passed the buck and told me to contact the retailer. So nice to know they care about the quality of their product. Needless to say, I’m not impressed with this brand. My full review of the Joyballs Single is posted on the EdenFantasys website.

Plastic Kegel exercise ballsNot long after my Joyballs Single incident, I decided to try other sex toys designed to strengthen the PC muscles. I found a very affordable option in the Duotone Orgasm Ballsfrom California Exotics. As is the case with most Kegel exerciser balls, these are hollow with a smaller, weighted ball inside.

But unlike the silicone and elastomer vaginal balls I’ve previously used, these are made from hard plastic and connected by a nylon string. Their smooth surface has a two-tone marbled pattern, and they’re available in either pink and white or purple and white.

When the string is stretched out straight, the total length measures 8 inches, with 3 inches of fixed string in between the balls. I admit that I was a bit surprised when I discovered that the bottom ball doesn’t slide freely along the string, but when inserted the balls easily push up against each other, so I don’t even notice the spare string in between.

Front of Packaging

Underneath the bottom ball, the nylon string forms a 2 1/4 inch loop for easy removal.  Each ball has a diameter of about 1 1/4 inches, making their girth around 4 1/4 inches, and when the balls are pushed together they measure close to 3 inches long. Around the middle of each ball is a visible seam, but I honestly can’t feel it when I’m wearing them.

The packaging is very minimal. It’s just an easy-to-open, clear plastic clamshell, with a paper insert backing that has some basic product information on it. It could be used for storage, but it takes up more space than just keeping the balls in a plastic bag.

Since these balls are hard plastic, they’re easy to clean with just soap and water or toy cleaner. My one gripe is that the nylon string takes a while to dry. This isn’t a huge deal, but it’s something to keep in mind, especially when using the bathroom. I have no trouble keeping these in while urinating, but feeling the wet string against me afterwards is rather unpleasant, and there may be some associated hygiene concerns.

Doutone Orgasm Balls Packaging

Back of Packaging

As far as wearing them, hard plastic is a lot slicker than materials like silicone or elastomer that have surface drag. This means I can easily insert them without any lube, but I have to work a little harder at keeping them in since smooth plastic doesn’t have any grip. Lube could possibly make them too slippery to keep inserted, as they might easily slide right back out again.

The little balls inside really do rattle around, making more noise than other Kegel balls I’ve tried, and they’re clearly audible at times when I’m wearing them, depending on their position inside of me and how I’m moving. This means I can’t really use them discreetly, so I won’t be wearing these out in public.

Now, I will say that I get more sensation from these than any other Kegel balls I’ve used so far, but for the noise they make it seems like I should feel them eve more. If that makes any sense. But considering they only cost around $8 a pair, I’m not expecting premium materials or upscale quality.

All in all, they’re fairly comfortable, so these are great to wear around the house for a few hours, and they do provide noticeable stimulation while working the PC muscles. Since they’re so affordable and easy to use, these would be ideal for those new to Kegel balls, or sex toys in general for that matter. I posted a video tour over at EdenFantasys.com, and they currently sell the Duotone Orgasm Balls for $7.99.
