Follow-Up Friday: Rabbit Habit

Dual action vibrator featured in "Sex and the city"The Vibratex Elastomer Rabbit Habit has been around for a while now, and it’s probably one of the more well known rabbit vibes on the market. I bought one because it was the only phthalate-free rabbit vibe I could find online that was within my price range, but that was several years ago. This was my very first rabbit vibe ever, and out of all the other rabbits I’ve subsequently collected, this is still one of my favorites.

It used to be the favorite, and it held that top spot for years, mostly because it worked better for me than other rabbit vibes. I like a rotating shaft and flappy bits on the attached bullet, which the Rabbit Habit has, in addition to beads in the shaft that hit me exactly where needed. Also, the dimensions are just right for my anatomy.

However, recently I acquired a Jopen Vr10, and it’s now my favorite rabbit vibe, despite lacking the requisite shaft beads. In many ways it’s a much better sex toy, in my opinion. Compared to more luxurious rabbits, the Rabbit Habithas a lot of flaws to overcome:

  • It’s made from elastomer, which is like TPR. As much as I love squishy flappy ears, material safety is compromised as elastomer is slightly porous. Also, it’s a lint magnet and has skin drag. Silicone is a superior material because it’s not porous and can be disinfected.
  • The Rabbit Habit is battery hungry, and the compartment is pretty flimsy. I really prefer rechargeable toys.
  • Power to the shaft motor is compromised when the bullet motor is at the higher speeds. This gets on my nerves, but that’s how it is. Now, on the Jopen Vr10, both motors are very powerful, and I notice no decrease in power on the shaft motor, even with the clit vibe going full tilt.
  • The Rabbit Habit isn’t waterproof. Most luxury rabbits now are. Not that I necessarily want to take my rabbit into the shower with me, but waterproof toys are so much easier to clean.
  • Oh my, the noise! The motors on my Rabbit Habit are really loud. You hear ever crank and hum. High-end vibrators usually have quiet motors.

I consider myself very lucky that I have opportunities to try out sex toys without having to pay for them, because there’s no way I would have personally shelled out $200+ for a Jopen Vr10. As nice as it is, I honestly think that’s too much for a vibe that shows a visible seam and has controls that don’t allow the user to decrease as well as increase the motor speeds.

As unappealing as they may seem to sex toy connoisseurs, there are reasons cheaper rabbits are in such high demand. At least, I have a few theories.

  • Most are within a reasonable price range. Considering all the different styles, sizes, dimensions, etc. that affect a rabbit vibe’s effectiveness for any given user, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get it right with the first one you buy. I lucked out, and I think the Rabbit Habit does tend to work for most people, but I can also see how a bad first experience with the wrong rabbit might put some folks off the whole idea. Either way, it doesn’t make sense to invest a lot of money in a toy that may or may not get the job done for you.
  • Many of the less expensive rabbits are now phthalate-free, and there’s more selection and variety than what you often see in the luxury lines.
  • Why aren’t there more luxury rabbits with slide controls? I’ll agree that they don’t look all that stylish, as evidenced by Fun Factory’s Mary Mermaid and Sally Seal.

But one of the main reasons I still love my Rabbit Habit is because of its slide controls. They make it so easy to quickly back off of one motor and ramp up the other. Luxury vibes tend to have buttons, which need to be repeatedly pressed or held.

While the high-end sex toys are generally superior in design, functions, materials, and overall quality, they aren’t necessarily any more effective than some of the more affordable options. Any given vibe is only worth the investment if you know it will work for you. Some vibes may have a learning curve, so don’t give up after just one or two uses, but ultimately, if a vibe doesn’t get the job done, then it’s not likely to ever be used no matter how much it cost.
