Ono Massage Candle

There’s a reason I featured Booty Parlor’s Don’t Stop Massage Candle as my Follow-Up Friday post last week. It’s because Fascinations, a great sex toy shop, recently sent me an Ono Massage Candle to review, and I couldn’t help comparing the two in my mind. I’ve actually been wanting to try more massage candles, so I was glad to receive this one in French Vanilla & Shea Butter, but Ono also offers Red Mandarin & Shea Butter, as well as Lemongrass & Shea Butter scents.

Unlike the Don’t Stop Massage Candle that’s more elaborately packaged in a pretty box and porcelain jar, Ono massage candles comes in a simple black tin with a lift-off lid.

Flip the tin over to find basic usage instructions: “Light it up. Blow it out. Enjoy.” That’s also where you’ll see the ingredients list. The French Vanilla and Shea Butter Ono Massage Candleis made from body-safe and clean burning soy wax, shea butter, apricot kernel oil, perfume (benzyl benzoate), and vanillin. Oh, and I apologize for the price sticker residue over the bar code. I thought there might be more product information under there, so I tried to peel the sticker off, only it was one of those impossible-to-completely-remove type of stickers.

Underneath the lid is a thin plastic accordion-like users manual. This has more detailed usage information printed in several different languages, such as always trim wick to 1/4 of an inch before burning, extinguish the candle and check temperature of oil before pouring the melted wax on to skin, and not to burn the entire candle, but there’s no information on how long to burn it at one time or any indication as to the total burn time.

This is what it looked like after the first time I burned it. I trimmed the wick before lighting it again. You can see where the melted wax dribbled down the side of the tin when I poured it.

Where I poured off the melted wax it left a crater, and now during subsequent burnings only the wax in that center circle melts. Here’s what it looked like after the second burning, before using the melted wax.

The scent is pretty faint unless I’m right next to it while burning, but like a lot of candles, when I blow it out the fragrance becomes more noticeable. Before lighting, it’s a nice, subtle vanilla scent that, if I want to be really picky, does seem slightly perfumy, but when burning it really has more of a sweet smell to it, as one would probably expect of a vanilla scented candle.

But, what I really love about this massage candle is that its melting point is low so you can use the wax right away. I can pour it straight into my hand or onto whatever body part I’m massaging, and it’s very comfortably warm–not at all too hot. Even though it melts at a relatively low temperature, it’s still liquid, and the lack of a spout (plus my overall clumsiness and propensity to make a mess) means that it drips when I use it, but cleanup is fairly easy.

The melted wax works well as a massage oil. It absorbs into skin nicely, unless I use too much. A little definitely goes a long way. I’ve also used it as a hand lotion. Well, why not? It’s on my hands anyway, and it does leave them feeling soft, if very slightly tacky. My only real complaint is that the melted wax doesn’t stay liquid for very long, especially once poured onto my skin. After the candle is extinguished, the wax stays pretty soft in the tin for a while, but the softened wax doesn’t work as well as when it’s in an oil form. So, this one is probably better for wax play and short massage as opposed to extended, full-body massages.

So far I’ve burned my Ono Massage Candle for a couple of hours, and there’s still quite a bit of wax left. I’ll try to keep track of how much burn time I get out of it so I can let you all know when I feature it in a Follow-Up Friday post.

I am a candle freak going back for years. I was told once that to get the maximum burn for any candle you should always let it burn until it has burned all the way across.

I've applied that rule to my massage candles as well to avoid the craters. It can be near impossible to melt the edges once that happens it seems.

Great information, thank you for posting! Too bad the instructions didn't mention that.

That is really helpful information. Thanks!

I love massage candles and I've had my eye on this one so your review is very helpful as always. I'm a bit sad about the tacky aspect and lack of spout. Have you tried the bWarm candle? It's super easy to pour.
