Follow-Up Friday: Don’t Stop Massage Candle

Last June I reviewed Booty Parlor’s Don’t Stop Massage Candle in the Spicy Chocolate Cinnamon scent. I love being rubbed, I like nice-smelling candles (as long as they’re not perfumy, blech), and so a massage candle seemed like the ideal bedroom accessory. Light it up, let it burn and fill the room with a relaxing scent, and then use the melted wax as a massage oil.

I chose the Booty Parlor candle for several reasons. I love chocolate and cinnamon, so I knew I’d like the scent. I was also wooed by the packaging. That is one the Booty Parlor company does well. Their products come in lovely black and pink boxes, and/or cool spherical bottles. The price seemed a bit hefty, but I managed to snag one while it was on sale. I live for getting stuff on sale.

I was all set to love this product, but I didn’t give it a very favorable review for several reasons.

  • I think it’s overpriced. I know the packaging is awesome and gorgeous, but $36 for any kind of candle is just too much to pay in my opinion. Unless it’s gold-plated or something, but what’s the use of that? Considering the price, it should have lived up to all of its claims, but I don’t think it did.
  • The melted wax is too hot to use for massage. Either that, or I’m overly wimpy when it comes to temperature play, which is entirely possible, but I don’t like pain or being burned.
  • I had to let the wax cool for a few moments in order for it to be a comfortable temperature for massage, and that meant I had less time to use it before it cooled to the point of being a sticky mess that was somehow also greasy.
  • It’s a sticky mess! The whole idea is the wax melts into massage oil, which ideally should work into skin, right? That didn’t happen for me. It left a nasty residue that required a shower to wash off. Not to mention, it got all over my sheets.
  • It’s high-maintenance. I know, most candles should be cared for a certain way, and trimming the wick is important and all that, but this one became increasingly difficult to use. The container has a spout for easy pouring, but what happened was the melted wax would coat the wick, and then it wouldn’t light. I ended up digging the wick out of the wax several times, which wasted wax and meant that I didn’t get the full 46 hours of burn time.
  • After several tries to use the melted wax for massage, I resolved just to burn it as a candle. While I thoroughly enjoyed the scent using it as a regular candle, that’s not why I bought it.

Okay, now that I’ve ranted on about why I didn’t like it, in the interest of being fair I’ll list the things I do like about it.

  • It smells awesome! For real, I do love the chocolate and cinnamon combination. It’s not too heavy, but it’s strong enough to fill the room nicely, and I find the scent to be relaxing, which is nice.
  • It’s made from body-safe and clean-burning ingredients.
  • It supposedly has a burn time of 46 hours. I’m sure that’s pretty true if you don’t have to keep scraping layers of wax off the wick.
  • The packaging is gorgeous, discreet and great for gift-giving.
  • I love the jar it comes in. In fact, the candle has long burned away, but I kept the jar. I’m not sure what I think I’m going to use it for, since the residue is nearly impossible to clean off, but maybe one day I’ll figure out something cool to do with it.

I would like to point out that we all have different body chemistry and heat tolerance levels, so while my experience with this candle was less than ideal, it may work perfectly well for others. But I won’t be buying another one.

I'm sorry this one didn't work out for you. Have you tried any of the bSwish candles?

I haven't tried the bSwish candles, but I'd like to. I'm up for trying them all. :)

I know there's probably no perfect massage candle, but I want something that smells good, feels good, lasts a decent amount of time, and doesn't leave much mess.

That is so disappointing because the packaging is so awesome, but you're right about the price. I just got some Booty Parlor massage oil to try out.

I love my bSwish candle but the scent is very strong. Fortunately it's a good scent for me. :)
