Sex Toys 101
I love that fellow bloggers and reviewers offer giveaways, especially when I win! I was lucky enough to receive a copy of Sex Toys 101: A Playfully Uninhibited Guide courtesy of Babeland.com. I knew it was going to be a book I’d enjoy as it’s all about one of my favorite topics.
What I didn’t know, and was very pleased to learn, is how comprehensive it is. This book really has a lot of very useful information, not just about sex toys, but sex in general, all presented in a matter-of-fact way and written in a very relaxed, laid-back tone. Sex Toys 101: A Playfully Uninhibited Guide is a paperback book written by Rachek Venning and Claire Cavanah, founders of Toys in Babeland.
Based on their Sex Toys 101 workshops, this book is a way to share the information with a larger audience since not everyone can attend a workshop. It’s beautifully laid out, with gorgeous photographs of sex toys artistically arranged, informative sidebars, and text broken up with product pictures. There are 10 chapters, so I’ll give you a brief rundown on each. Just remember: “There is no right or wrong way to have an orgasm.”
Chapter 1 is all about anatomy, complete with black-and-white diagrams of both female and male genitalia and a wealth of basic, yet essential information, including tips for doing Kegels, a quick cunnilingus how-to, and anal advice.
Chapter 2 moves on to sexuality, stressing the importance of knowing your own “erotic map” so you can more effectively communicate your desires to your partner. Self-exploration is important for improving your sex life, and keeping a sex diary is recommended. This chapter also includes tips on achieving orgasm for the first time, as well as information on role playing, aural stimulation, and erotica.
Chapter 3 covers vibrators, in detail with plenty of pictures. I love chapter 3. It includes a fascinating history of vibrators, an introduction to the various styles and types of vibes, tips for choosing, caring for, and using vibrators, as well as some entertaining vibe-related anecdotes.
Chapter 4 is all about dildos and strap-ons. This was an education for me! Much more accustomed to the stuff mentioned chapter 3, I’m not all that familiar with non-vibrating dildos, and I’ve never tried a realistic one. This is mostly because there are SO many, and I honestly have no clue where to start or what I think I might like. However, chapter 4 took care of that for me, with a checklist for selecting a dildo, an overview of designs and functions, great information on dildo and harness care, how to use a dildo.
Chapter 5 discusses anal play and butt toys in detail, including safety information, anal sex guidelines, an overview of the different types and materials of anal toys, as well as instructional video recommendations. There is also an extremely useful “Rosebud Massage” how-to and some hygiene tips.
Chapter 6, titled “The Men’s Room” is a guide to sex toys for men. Again, I learned a lot from this chapter as I have very little no experience with any of these types of products. At least no first-hand experience, as I lack a key anatomical part. There are plenty of toys out there that men and women can both enjoy, but I feel like now I have a better understanding of penis pumps, sleeves, and cock rings (and the necessary safety information). Instructions for men on how to become multi-orgasmic is also included in this chapter.
Chapter 7 gives you the lube lowdown. I’m a big fan of lube, but certain ingredients irritate me, and it took me a while to figure out that glycerin is something I need to avoid. This chapter covers why glycerin may be a problem for some women, as well as outlining what type of lube is appropriate for certain activities. Oil-based, water-based, silicone, and flavored lubes are all discussed.
Chapter 8 delves into bondage and domination. I am really impressed with how thorough this chapter is. Starting off with a list of reasons people enjoy bondage and reassurance that it’s okay to play with power and sex as long as it’s safe and consensual, it also covers negotiation tips, safety guidelines, planning suggestions, and includes a very comprehensive section on restraints. Towards the end there’s even a “Top or Bottom” quiz for those who may need help figuring out which way they lean.
Chapter 9 takes on sensory play, sex with an edge, and playing with power. Here again, I really got an education as sadomasochism is new territory for me. For those interested in exploring more intense sensations, this chapter has some great information, stressing the importance of communication, trust, and prior negotiations. Tips for setting up a scene, flogging techniques, and a guide to Dungeon gear are also included.
Chapter 10 is all about safety and full of crucial information. I love the “Field Guide to Condoms” section which covers how to put on a condom and how to chose (and store) the right condom for the job. Dental dams are also discussed, as are gloves and instructions for making a fingering/oral barrier.
All that, plus there’s an INDEX! I love it. It’s an awesome reference tool. I also love how this book makes no assumptions as far as gender or sexual orientation. Hopefully, in the next edition they will update the information on sex toy materials since more manufacturers are producing phthalate-free versions of popular jelly toys now. I’d also like to point out that the relaxed style of the book means that certain slang words are used. While the subject matter covered is presented very tastefully, the authors don’t stick to strictly medical terminology. But that is not an issue for me. I think Sex Toys 101 is definitely worth having.
Babeland.com also offers a really cool Sex Toys 101 Kit, which includes the book, 4 oz of Babelube, Babeland’s Nubby G vibrator, a Silver Bullet vibe, a Little Flirt butt plug, and batteries, all ready and packaged for gift giving in a box with a ribbon for $65. That’s a great value a $29 savings compared to buying each item individually.
